My Process
The basics
Good business relationships begin with clear communication — that’s why I take the time to understand your needs (including the purpose of the project, deadline, budget, and word count) before I start writing. After we’re clear on the scope of the work, I’ll conduct any necessary research (web-based, interviews, etc.) to gather the information I need for the copy. When I’ve got the information I need, the wordsmithing begins and a first draft is created.
Drafts
Revisions are a normal part of the writing process. Even the finest piece of writing needs a second set of eyes, whether by a client or editor. I’m known for filing “clean” copy (that is, copy with few spelling or grammatical mistakes), but some changes are inevitable. Writing is a process and a first draft can sometimes reveal that the initial plan for the writing needs to be adjusted. Now and then, word counts need to be increased, additional sources contacted or the angle altered, in order to create a piece of writing that meets the needs of a client or editor.
That said, I’m careful to ensure I understand a client’s needs and expectations at the start of a project, to minimize future revisions.
My areas of specialization
I’ve written on everything from epigenetics to dog beer, but I’m particularly skilled in these areas:
- Science/technology/engineering
- Health and wellness (including mental health)
- Entrepreneurship
- Career development
- Human resources
My other creative services
In addition to writing, I’m a fine artist and illustrator. For more on my visual art, please visit crawshawcreative.com
I’m also a competent photographer with a digital SLR/Photoshop and an artist’s eye. I’m happy to take photos to accompany written content.
Rates
I generally charge by the word, but sometimes clients prefer an hourly rate. I’m amenable to both.
